OKR for the personal growth

In order to promote the growth of our members, we started OKR. In this blog, I'd like to introduce the actual operation.

Our policy for the employee training

In my opinion, there are 2 types of the training. The first one is for the minimum skill to be able to work on the projects of the company. Another one is to increase the top line to improve the performance or expand the field. For the latter one, the general training of companies is to let members focus on technologies or skills that they need in a company. But in our company, we respect the strengths or the interests of each member because that should be fastest to learn with the highest motivation. So in order to grow up the company, we focus on the personal growth. This is our policy as a precondition.

What is OKR?

Objectives and Key Results (OKR) is a popular leadership process for setting, communicating and monitoring quarterly goals and results in organizations. The goal of OKRs is to connect company, team and personal objectives in a hierarchical way to measurable results, making all employees work together in one unified direction.

The purpose of our OKR

The original OKR is for the growth of the organization so the objectives must relate to the strategy of the organization.
But in our company, we use it for the personal growth. In order to achieve your long-term goal, we clarify the small milestones. These small milestones should be your objectives.
Also, we use it for the strong teamwork to share our strength, interest, and objectives with all members. This can encourage the support each other. We don’t use its result for HR assessment.
So let’s make the ambitious objectives. You don’t need to achieve them 100%.

Use cases

• Have 1 on 1 meeting with a manager or a mentor to update the OKR at the beginning of every month
• Share with all after updating
• Share with team members when joining the new project
• Share with a partner when doing pair programming
• etc as the introduction

In 1 on 1 meeting

What a mentor has to do is:

• to respect the objectives of a member,
• to give them advice finding better objectives to achieve a long-term goal,
• to give them advice finding better Key Results to achieve objectives,
• to guide how to learn through their current project for their objectives.

A sample of OKR sheet

Our OKR sheet is composed of some parts. Here's the sample of OKR sheet (my first OKR). I would be happy if it could be helpful for you.

Yes, one of my long-term goals is to make the 10B USD company. In order to do that, now is the input period. So I change my life cycle to adjust my "balance sheet" of my time like below.

• 22:00 - 22:30 Muscle train and stretch
• 22:30 - 23:00 Watch TED (mainly to train English listening skill)
• 23:00 - Read a book
